Ipad assignment
Logic Solving
Help your child learn to associate numbers with their corrilation skills. With Logic Solving children will play an old game we all grew up with.. memory. However with logic solving children have to match up a certain number with the correct amount of dots. This would be a great app to use in a K-3 classroom. Not only will the kids be learning but it will also help with their memory skills along with learning to count and use their numbers.
They could play this by themselves or even against one another. I would deffinatly use this app in my classroom for smaller children and even to teach my own children! I know my numbers and I still had fun playing it.

My Role: The Affiliator For Secondary
Saving the Gorillas
Strengths: Students could work together to find out questions to these answers. There are specific questions this website wants answered, and there is a goal to be reached. Gives specific websites for the students to go to to help them answer questions given.
Weaknesses: There are many typos throught the website. This could distract from work. The rubric givin on the website isn't very clear. The credits aren't sited correctly. This could show students how not to do something.
World of Shakespear:
Strengths: It is a group assignment. It has clear and direct directions. It prvides websites that the answers to their questions can be found on. The rubric is very clear and not hard to read at all.
Weaknesses: Some of the work to be turned in is a lot of work. Even if they are working in a group seeing that much work could be discouraging. It gives each group member a role. This will make them work individually for a while they should stay in groups and work as a team.
Anti Earthquake Designer
Strengths: Has fun colors and fun pictures to get students involved. Has students working in a group at all times, even though they have different names of what they are to do. Step by step instructions planned out in weeks.
Weaknesses: There are many objects the students will need to do this task. That could use up a lot of money. It is through a four week window and it gives a lot of work for these groups to do.

Strengths: It has very clear instructions. Also made into a contest that will get students motivated. Websites are given to students to help them with their work.
Weaknesses: It is an individual work not group.
Waves and Sounds
Stengths: It has good directions and is easy to read. Has good websites to help the students. Easy to read rubric
Weaknesses: It is not a group activity. It is a little boring which will probably not motivate students.

Social-networking ban for sex offenders
Summarize the argument in this article:
This article is about a law passed in Illinois to keep registered sex offenders off social media websites. The author of this article doesn't think a registered sex offender should be kicked off the web. They make many good points as to why they believe this is so.
What evidence is presented to support the argumnt:
The author gives us examples of some states who make a person register as a sex offender if they pee in public. Or if they are two teenagers and get caught having sex. These aren't the typical people I think of as sex offenders. These aren't the typical people anyone thinks of as sex offenders. I mean think about it.. do you think a streaker should be considered a sex offender?
Validate what is presented:
I think that this article makes some very good points. It is clearly stated what the author feels and they back up their opinions with facts about other states. I find this article to be very credible.
I feel that this article is correct. I am not in any way for sex offenders, and I wouldn't want them online either so they could hurt my children whenever that time comes. But I don't feel that a teenager that got a little drunk one night and was dared to go steaking should be banned from social media websites because their state made them register as a sex offender. We do need to crack down on who our children can talk to, b ut I think a lot of that is up to the parent being involved with their children.

Wikipedia Friend Or Foe
Wikipedia Friend Not Foe
Three things I learned...
1) Before class and before reading this article I had no idea that anyone could edit wikipedia. I had no idea that teachers really had that big of a problem with it. When I went to school we were encouraged to use Wikipedia but only for a starting point. I didn't know that schools actually banned this website.
2) I had no idea that Wikipedia is so widespread. I only thought it was for the english speaking nation. But in the article it states that it is in over 90 different languages.
3) Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia.. but there are entries on it that aren't included in the actual encyclopedia.
Two thing that surprised me..
1) I find it amazing how fast information can be put on wikipedia. The Virginia Tech example amazed me. I remember being in school watching the whole thing as it unfolded because where I lived we were all "Hookie Fans." It's just so crazy!
2) Students like us are constantly editing wikipedia to make it a more credible resource to use in papers! As they find information they put it in wikipedia.. I think this is so neat!
Question
Why are so many teachers against this site? After reading this I don't see why it's so bad.. I actually think its really helpful!

Double Entry Journal 10
Three things I learned from these websites:
1) There are many different things that go along with a learning disability. That many people don't understand, it is a complex thing with no two people having the same difficulties.
2) Many people don't understand exactly what a learning disability can consist of. Many people just see these students as dumb or lazy where they are the complete opposite.
3) Most students with learning disabilities have to teach themselves in order to fully understand what is going on in class. They have trouble with reading, writing, and math and each one is more severe then the other.
What can asisstive technology do:
1) These tools if they fit the person is right for it will help boost their self-esteem and build confidence.
2) It will also help them to learn in different ways. It helps them to express themselves by helping them with their feelings.

Who: The press and co-founder of this organization is stated as Xiao Min. There is an email address to contact this person along with so background information as to why he founded this place. There are several other names to this company along with their email address. However these names just don't seem real. Their stories aren't all that credible either. It makes it seem as though these people aren't real.
What: This website although it is easy to read is a little hard to understand. It's just such a crazy thought it's mind boggaling! You are to send your dog or dogs in a crate to some far away island where they are free to roam. The information is consistent and gives you a form to fill out to send your dog. However as i stated above it is very difficult to feel that this information is real.

Online Relationships

Reaction
I find it so hard to believe that there are people out there meeting the love of their lives online. I couldn't imagine meeting anyone online and having the courage to meet them in person. You never know what you are going to run into, because people can make up things online. They can use different kinds of pictures that may make them look younger.. they could even be serial killers and no one would ever know! I know that they have criminal background checks for free onine, but who is to say this person didn't make up a name? I just find it off that someone could meet and marry a person they met online.
I know many friendships are from meeting online but what do you think the actuality of those two people actually meeting are? I have never really noticed how much social media is evolving. How much courage people have to meet someone they really have no idea who they are. I feel that as teachers we need to teach our students how to be careful about who all they become friends with and who all they tell much of their information to.

Lets try something different!

Reaction
I believe that all learning institutions need to find ways to use media in the ways they educate these 21st century students. I agree with this article that the ways we as students are being taught is stuck in the 19th century. Still in some classes I am taking now teachers just sit in front of the class and lecture the whole time. This for me is very boring and on occasion I have trouble staying awake. I want to be taught with tools that in todays world are popular like a computer. I want to do hands on activities that interest me! I know that younger kids probably want the same thing I do and just as I aren't getting them. I feel that when I become a teacher I need to find ways to interest my students and keep them interested. That way they will want to learn and stay awake during class. If we don't interest our students they won't ever learn. They'll be thinking of different things like what that text said before class, or wonder whats going on in the world of Facebook. To keep this from happening teachers need to use different tools that they enjoy using to help them learn.

In this link I found tips and ideas to teach using films. Movies or even just an activity on the computer can help your students learn... as long as it's interesting. It not only will give you a break from talking and writing on the board, but it will give it's students a break as well.

Media Literacy

Reaction
I do believe that today's media literacy is a good tool in helping todays children. But still I do believe that it is hard for today's kids with all the media online and on television for children to get away from those undesirable influences. We as teachers need to help our students understand what is good and bad. I feel that today's teachers try and help their students learn whats good and bad but they have difficulties in how to do so. Teachers don't understand that it's not always taught at home, and don't really know what students are up against.
Media literacy in all aspects is very critical in what we need to be teaching out students. We need to understand they are under many different kinds of pressures in todays society. We need to teach them what to expect and how to understand what is really going on.

Media Literacy

Reaction
I feel that I say this in a lot of my blog posts, but I have never before this class learned about media literacy. It was something that was never brought up in class or at home.. but I feel this is because my teachers had little or no knowledge or how to teach it if they knew anything about it to begin with. My parents know that I am not really one to pick up a newspaper and read it or even sit down and watch the news. I don't feel any need to because I know I won't get the whole story, or even lied to about something. If I wanted to be lied to I would go talk to my little brother. So media literacy was never anything I thought I would need.
But during class when we used this with an activity I found it very informative and I know that it's something I could teach my students and maybe get them involved. I'm not sure there is really anything in the math field that I could use, but if there is just something that catches my eye maybe I could use that. I never thought that you could look at a picture and infer so many things that leaves you wanting to know more.

My related resource is a lesson plan that involves critical thinking and media literacy. It shows students that they need to use these skills everyday, because they see media messages while watching t.v., listening to the radio, or even just walking down the road.

Reaction
I feel that I say this in a lot of my blog posts, but I have never before this class learned about media literacy. It was something that was never brought up in class or at home.. but I feel this is because my teachers had little or no knowledge or how to teach it if they knew anything about it to begin with. My parents know that I am not really one to pick up a newspaper and read it or even sit down and watch the news. I don't feel any need to because I know I won't get the whole story, or even lied to about something. If I wanted to be lied to I would go talk to my little brother. So media literacy was never anything I thought I would need.
But during class when we used this with an activity I found it very informative and I know that it's something I could teach my students and maybe get them involved. I'm not sure there is really anything in the math field that I could use, but if there is just something that catches my eye maybe I could use that. I never thought that you could look at a picture and infer so many things that leaves you wanting to know more.

Digital Story Telling
This week we used a tool called digital story telling. With this we made up stories about different quotes on teaching. To tell these stories we used pictures from the web, used text, and even music. At first it was kind of hard to get the hang of but with time and effort I got the hang of it. It was a lot of fun and very useful for classroom use to have students use their imagination.
Being a math teacher digital story telling would be a difficult thing to use all the time. However I could use it by having students tell a story of how certain theories came along, certain definitions, or how shapes came around. It's a good tool, and I think students would have a fun time with it. My Digital Story Diagram

The Four R's

Reaction
Throughout this whole essay I found myself a little confused. But I understood this quote completely and was a little amazed. Through this whole class I find myself amazed very many times. To think that this whole world one day will be based on technology, and we don't even know what to expect. I find myself not really knowing how to use a computer and all the new gadgets it comes with. All the different tools that we use in class to do projects and other things as well. Before intro to technology I had no idea what a blog even was!
Now I have to think about how I am going to use technology in my classroom to help do my students learn how to use technology. When I was in high school which wasn't really very long ago we never did anything on the computer. A little before the quote I used it explained how a 10th grade student didn't know how to put art in his work. He knew exactly how to use the computer just not to sure how to add art to make the video what it was. I would find this true in most cases now... I know from experience that younger kids and even older ones teach themselves how to play games on xbox or what ever kind of game system they have. With in a little time they know exactly how to use it, and exactly how beat this game in a matter of hours.
On day kids, our students, will be more technology savie then their teachers. I believe the only reason for this is, is because we weren't taught growing up like they were.

According to the code ofbest practice teachers are allowed to use media based things and post them on youtube as long as these things are educational. They also have to follow the fair use practices. Teachers are protected to teach with multimedia tools. They do not need to get permition from the creator to use these works as long as it is used for education purposes and will not hurt the value of the copyrights work.. Teachers just need to make sure they are following all the guidelines that is set by their school system. They also need to again make sure they are using the fair use practices while using these works. When a teacher or student uses copyrighted material they need to make sure that they use it kindly. They can't use a whole work some else has done. They are only allowed to use little pieces and even then they need to make sure that they cite their sources.

Storytelling in the Classroom

Reaction
This quote struck me as crazy. I just can't get over how one program can involve all these different skills. We were working on digital story telling in class and I didn't even realize that I was using all these different things. All I knew is that I had no idea what I was doing and just getting confused. But after getting used to it it became more fun and went by really fast. These programs can really help kids learn things in a fun way. This would be a good tool to use in the classroom to help kids understand a certain subject area in something like history or science on a certain subject.
This article also talked about younger kids using this to do homework assignments. When I was in 6th grade I didn't even know how to use a computer. Getting kids interesting in technology when they are younger is a good way to keep them interested and helping their skills on the computer. With this class we learned that one day most jobs will be on the computer using technology.

Spelling Reform?

"In fact, he said, with the exception of a few recent coinages like LOL, “virtually all the commonly used ones can be found in English a century ago.” For example, bn (been), btwn (between) and wd (would) can all be found in a 1942 dictionary of abbreviations." (Ammon,2010)
Reaction
While reading this passage I came across many things that I found amazing. But this quote got me the most. I find it hard to believe that many of the words people use today in their text messages was actually once a way the word was actually spelled. These words were found in a 1942 dictionary, and are still commonly used today in a persons text message. But what this article really focused on was reforming the way words are spelled today. This was something else that really blew my mind. To think that we've been spelling these words since were in the 2nd and 3rd grade and now they want to change the way things are spelled! How is a teacher just gonna one day say we've been spelling these words this way for years but now we want to change them?
We mentioned in class that different countries spell some common english words like color in many different ways, and some places like universities will except them, but if your in grade school they won't. How can a teacher tell their students that they way their parents taught them to spell is wrong? If a parent is from that country and thats all they know who is the teacher to mark their paper wrong when they spell it the way they are used to it being spelled. We as teachers need to be understanding of different countries and different cultures and help students to understand that their way is right, but there is also another way.
I think this conversation relates to this passage in many ways. To reform our spelling to maybe how it sounds, or the easiest way to spell it is how many other countries spell their words. But people don't think that we should change the way spelling is.. they understand that today's age with text messaging really is changing the way students write and spell but they don't want it to be changed. Even though thats how these words were once spelled centuries ago.

What Kind of Learner am I?
During class today I had to take a quiz on what kind of learner I am. I pretty much knew how I learned best and this test helped to prove that I was correct. The test told me that I am a reading/writing kind of learner. Although there was a close call between that kind of learner and Aural I do believe that I would prefer to learn by reading rather then being told how to do something and listening to discussions.

Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
This week during class we used two websites that were new to me. We used PollEverywhere and Wordle.These two websites were linked together where we were able to collaborate with the rest of the class. First we set up a Polleverythere account and let the rest of the class use their cell phones or their computer to answer specific questions we set up on our blog. Then from these responses we went to Wordle and inserted these answers in Wordle which then picked out the most common used words and made them the biggest followed by the other most used words that would get smaller and smaller with every other word used in the amount they were used from greatest to least. This enabled us to to get to know others in the class by their answers.
My goal in life is to become a math teacher, but when I think about useing Wordle or PollEverywhere at first I thought how in the heck can I use either one of these? Thinking hard I remembered there are vocabulary words in math. Using PollEverywhere I could give my students a quiz or test using this tool. I could put a deffination up on the screen and using their cell phones or computers they could send me their anwer. I feel that this would be a good way to get students to study for their test or quiz and really keep them interested in math and not wanting to skip becuase they didn't study for their test. Then using Wordle I could use the answers I got to help me understand exactly how many of my students got the answer correctly. Then with that data I would be able to see from everything what students aren't really understanding and hit those words again.

I could send a out a poll asking students what they don't get about the information we are going over. Will text talk be our new language?

Reaction
All through school when turning in papers I could remember teachers saying things such as, "Leave that text message talk out of your paper or your getting an F!"I never really thought anything of it because where I am from we don't have cell phone service. We hardly even have good enough internet connection to be on Facebook for more then a couple minutes. So it's hard to understand this whole text message lingo when I see it, but since i've moved to Fairmont I am beginning to see exactly how it works little by little.
Reading this article really opened my eyes to see exactly how text message lingo is steadily working its way into every day language. A couple years ago if someone would have looked at me and said BRB I would have had probably thought they were insulting me in some way. But getting in the swing of texting and instant messaging I see so many acronyms that I generally have no idea what they mean. So I do believe that one day the statement above will be true. I do believe that eventually as the younger kids now grow up text talk will take over many words in the English language.
The acronyms people use such as LOL are so much easier then writing the whole thing out. It takes less time and is simply the fastest way to say what you need to say. Thats what our generation kids are wanting.. the easiest way out. Getting things done quickly because they believe they have better things to do with their life then sit and write a 3 page paper. From the article I read it seems that eventually these kids are going to completely change their attitude about the English language. It's going to eventually be thrown out all together.
As I was reading I found that the text talk isn't that bad right now. College students might slip in a BRB or LOL every once in a while, but they aren't really bad about it. What they are bad about is just hitting spell check and not actually taking the time to see what they spelled or even what they changed the word to. Technology makes things so easy we don't even have to think twice and our computer is changing the word for us. Kinda creepy if you think about it.. the computer knows more then you do!
All in all it might not be today or tomorrow but eventually text talk is going to be whats going into papers for school. At first it might just slip but eventually it's just going to be habit. Along with it will come no periods or capital letters. Because thats simply what we are coming accustomed to. It's what we do every day!

Technology Take Over

Reaction
While reading this article I couldn't believe that the world is going to change so much. Being a twentieth century student I don't realize all that is changing around me. The whole article at times made my jaw drop and completely stunned, but this quote caught me way off guard. The thought that teachers are trying to get children ready for a world that changes as much as it does. I've grown up where everyones thoughts were always the normal teacher, doctor, or vet. But no one has ever said I want a job that hasn't been invented yet. I don't think anyone really realizes that the world is changing as much as it is. That everyday something new is invented and a new job opportunity arises.
On the first day of class we watched a video that dealt with this topic. We talked about how technology is going to one day take over the job workforce. That eventually no one will ever have to go to the office and work. All work could be done from anywhere! Even while your on vacation, because eventually offices won't be there. Everything that people do now will eventually be done only on the computer.
I don't think people realize that the world changes every second of the day. Even teachers don't know exactly what they need to be preparing their students for. No one can be sure of what the world is going to be like several years from now. I believe that if the world is going to basically be computer orientated that teachers need to be preparing students by using many computer programs to help them learn. Just being out of high school a few years ago I remember no teachers did anything on the computer. We used textbooks, and did everything on paper. Teachers don't know how to use the computer with every day assignments. To get down to it.. teachers just don't know how to educate their students for the world ahead.
